How to fix the laminate to the ceiling

There are times when it is necessary to attach a laminate to the ceiling. You need to choose the right product, prepare the ceiling and choose a suitable mount. This will make the surface beautiful, durable, and increase its service life.

How to fix the laminate to the ceiling

There are 2 ways to glue the laminate to the ceiling:

  1. With glue.
  2. Having created the foundation.

The first method is rarely used. There are two reasons for this:

  1. When steam or moisture is released, water may enter the ceiling. This will weaken the glue base and the laminate may fall off.
  2. The unevenness of the ceiling. When installing the laminate, using glue, on an uneven ceiling, you must first align the ceiling. For this, putty is used, which is extremely undesirable. This adds extra weight and the laminate may fall off.

You need to buy special glue for the laminate. In addition to glue, you only need a hacksaw to work to align the edges of the boards. Before applying glue, it is necessary to clean the surface and cover it with varnish or primer.

The second method is more practical, because you can create a perfectly flat surface, and thanks to ventilation, the material can breathe. This will provide moisture protection.

We need to create a frame made of wood, with a thickness of not more than 10 mm. The material can be replaced with metal, but then the creation of the base will take more time, and it will become more difficult to fix the laminate. This method also has a drawback, additional space is required for the frame.

Ceiling requirement

To attach the laminate, it is necessary to prepare the surface. We remove all impurities, dry it (if moisture has accumulated). All this can harm the wood material. Now you need to calculate the area of the ceiling. The resulting value is divided by the surface area of one sheet. We get a number that means the number of boards needed. Round them to a larger value. Remember that pruning may be required during installation. Therefore, you should buy a few additional panels. In this case, you can start work without fear that the material is not enough for the entire surface.

Attention! Naturally, the requirements also depend on the materials of which the ceiling is made. If it is concrete, we close up all the gaps, and if it is wood, we process it with a means of protection against moisture (so that mold does not appear inside).

Instruments

We will need the following tools:

  1. Roulette or ruler.
  2. Marker.
  3. Reiki for a wooden crate.
  4. Level.
  5. Hammer and nails.
  6. Dowels.
  7. Jigsaw and hacksaw.
  8. Glue.

Material selection

In order to understand what the laminate is made of, it is necessary to consider the structure in section. We will see many layers that look a bit like lining, but the laminate is more reliable and has a longer shelf life. In a cut form, the material is as follows:

  1. The board is based on a fiberboard. It is impregnated with special solutions. It is necessary to ensure the strength of the material.
  2. The base is covered with paper imitating any material (in most cases, wood, because the laminate is considered one of the varieties of parquet).
  3. A melamine or acrylic film is applied to the paper layer. This is necessary to protect the paper (it is not a durable material, so it wears out quickly).
  4. The other side of the base is also coated with paper. It is coated with substances to protect against moisture. But if there is no problem with high humidity in the room where the laminate will be mounted, you can buy material without this layer, saving a little money.
  5. Layers of the connection. On the one hand, establish a longitudinal ridge, on the other - the groove corresponding to the ridge. These layers allow you to create a tongue-and-groove lock.

Laminate is always made of wood, so it is considered one of the varieties of parquet. But if we compare the laminate and parquet, the latter has less rigidity, and it is worse protected by water, temperature differences and mechanical damage. But it makes no sense to compare these materials with each other, since each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Laminate ceiling mount: step by step

The operation process will vary, depending on the mount selected. For example, using glue, you must:

  1. Level the ceiling with a building mixture.
  2. We apply several thin layers of putty.
  3. We are waiting for the mixture to dry.
  4. Apply glue to the area of the ceiling to which the board will be attached.
  5. Now apply glue to the panel.
  6. We process the locks of the modules with sealant to preserve the good condition of the material.
  7. We begin to mount the panels. The first installation site must choose one of the corners.
  8. While the glue dries, you need to hold the panel so that it does not fall off. But there are ways to avoid this - put the support or use double-sided tape in combination with glue.
  9. Lock the lock.
  10. Glue the next panel.
  11. If any panels are displaced, in need to be corrected.

This method is very similar to installing the laminate on the floor. If the diameter of the ceiling is small, you can make everything much simpler:

  1. We glue all the modules in advance by creating one large panel. We are waiting for the glue to dry.
  2. We attach it to the ceiling.
  3. We put the support. She holds the coating while the glue dries.

Reference! The use of the frame is suitable if it is not possible to align the ceiling, or there is a risk of material falling from the use of plaster. This method will also allow you to hide the wires.

As fasteners, self-tapping screws or dowels are used, but you can also make a suspension system. Self-tapping screws are more suitable for a wooden ceiling, as they reliably fix the panels to the surface, without making holes. Dowels and suspensions are more suitable for concrete ceilings. To create a wireframe you need:

  1. Clean the ceiling. We remove the old layers of plaster, as they will crumble in the process.
  2. We beat off the surface, relative to the level of the walls.
  3. We fasten the beam so that it is proportional to the laminate panel in length.
  4. We fix the panels on the beam. Nails are used for this. Drive them through the panel. The mount will not be visible, since the distance to the ceiling is large. But if the nails do not fit, you can use clams. They look prettier, but the installation process becomes more difficult, because for proper installation, in some places you will have to trim the laminate locks.
  5. Do not forget to make gaps between the plates and walls, ranging in size from 1 to 1.5 cm. They can be covered with decoration items, for example, curtain rods.
  6. The design is ready.

To do the right thing, you must follow certain rules and strictly follow the instructions. According to the instructions for the photo, everyone can lay the laminate at home. This finish looks beautiful in the interior, and is of high quality.
