How to assemble a transformer bed

You look through furniture stores one by one in search of a suitable bed (in our case, a transformer) and face a situation when the choice is large, but what you would like to purchase specifically is not on sale. Such difficulties can be corrected if there is a desire to independently design and assemble the product.

We choose the design and design of the transformer bed

Transformer beds vary in type of construction:

  1. Bed-cupboard. The most affordable and easiest option for a berth. Even a beginner will cope with the manufacture and assembly. It is a bed with a lifting device, pressed against the wall and having the form of a cabinet. This type of product is found in another version, when the berth is built into the finished wardrobe. However, it is more difficult to construct, which will require some experience in the assembly of furniture.
  2. Chest of drawers. A model close to the previous design is also not difficult to install. It differs by embedding the product not in a cabinet, but in a chest of drawers or a bedside table.
  3. Table bed. It is usually used in children's rooms, as in the table, in addition to the bed, there can be various drawers and a cabinet.
  4. Sofa bed. The advantage of this design is additional seating for the sofa, while the berth is folded. It is possible to create a two-tier model. The difficulty of assembly is the need to adapt the sofa, located on the facade of the folding bed. If you are just a beginner, it is better to entrust the assembly of such a product to a professional.
  5. Ceiling model. Expensive option. Its plus is the maximum saving of space. A sophisticated design that requires precise load calculations. Only a specialist can install this product correctly.

The advantages of DIY assembly include:

  1. Saving money. Buying a product in a store will cost much more.
  2. Space saving. This is especially important for small apartments.
  3. The availability of drawings of various models, they are easy to find on the Internet. There are also simple programs for modeling furniture.
  4. The ability to create your own bedroom project that will meet your needs.

How to assemble a transformer bed: the process step by step

Consider the method of manufacturing and installation of the most common design - wardrobe-bed.

The product consists of three parts:

  1. Case with a deep niche in which the bed is located. It can be made from laminated particleboard, they are affordable.
  2. The base for the mattress is made of timber in one of the variations: frame plus slats or a sheet of plywood. From the bottom of the base sheets of chipboard or MDF are attached, forming the facade of the product.
  3. Lifting system, connects the wardrobe and the berth. Depending on the type, it is spring or piston. The spring mechanism requires consideration of the weight of the structure. The piston lift is more durable and reliable, but will cost you more. Since this is an important part of the bed, bearing the main load, we recommend buying it in the factory.

Your first step is to create a detailed drawing of each element of the device. To do everything correctly, download the program for design - they are available on the network. Or you can choose a ready-made scheme on the Internet.

IMPORTANT! Do not forget that the project is made taking into account the size of the mattress.

Then select construction materials based on the above recommendations.

Determine which work you can do on your own, and which ones - trust the professionals.

ATTENTION! We advise you to cut the chipboard in the workshop, in order to avoid chipping material and possible marriage, this work is inexpensive. For the safety of parts, each of them will be glued with a special tape. Such a service will save you money, because you will have to hire a car to deliver a whole sheet of paper to the house, and if you lift it by floors, it will take loaders.

Tools for work:

  1. Impact electric drill.
  2. A set of drills: conventional, with a winning tip and confirm.
  3. Screwdriver
  4. Hacksaw or jigsaw.

Production is carried out in three steps: assembly of the frame, then the bed and the creation of a single structure from them. First stage:

  1. Fix the metal rail to the wall with anchor bolts. Or use 4 steel corners (1 mm thick), attaching them to the wall with dowel nails. The base of the cabinet will be two strong boards (about 2 meters high, selected along the length of the bed). Fasten the transverse boards between them, at the edges, at the top and bottom, using glue and self-tapping screws. Another type of fastener: with a confirmation drill, holes are drilled on the end faces, every 100-150 mm. Tightening screws are used to tightly connect the boards.
  2. Sheathe the finished frame, the sheathing is fixed with self-tapping screws and an adhesive joint.
  3. Fix the housing to the wall. Corners are attached to it with screws.

IMPORTANT! The depth of the box should be identical to the thickness of the bed. In order not to make a mistake in the size, leave a margin (a few centimeters). The cabinet can only be mounted on a solid wall (brick, monolithic concrete).

Second phase:

  1. Reinforce the plywood, which serves as the basis for the mattress, with four boards below (along and across) to avoid deformation. When connecting parts, use tie screws. To increase comfort, it is possible to supplement the base with a variety of sides, but the lifting system must remain free. It must be tried on the box and adjusted.
  2. In order to strengthen the structure, fasten all four corners with strong metal corners.
  3. Screw the lifting mechanism to the box with studs or bolts. To make the connection rigid enough, use washers and engravers.

The third stage:

  1. The lifting mechanism is connected to the cabinet through studs or bolts.
  2. Combine the bed and the body with loops, secure the free end of the hinged part with special fasteners. These fasteners keep the bed folded.
  3. Glue the ends of the boards with a self-adhesive film. To fix it tightly on the end, use a hot iron, then thoroughly wipe it with a dry cloth. Cut off excess tape and sandpaper.

IMPORTANT! Paintwork should be carried out before fixing the berth to the cabinet.

Transformer Bed Decor

There are various ways to decorate and enhance the look of your bedroom. Installed furniture can be additionally equipped with various cabinets and shelves, which will increase the functionality of the product. In children's rooms, the creation of patterns and combinations of several colors using acrylic paints is popular. If you are unable to draw, stencils will help (there are a lot of them on the Internet), allowing you to create your own design.

The outer part of the furniture for sleeping can be supplemented with invoice accessories or imitation handles to match the cabinet. Greater effect of furniture will give additional lighting details - LEDs and lamps. A smooth sheet is used as the facade upholstery, a swinging shelf is installed in the upper part, forming legs when lowering the berth.

ATTENTION! We do not recommend decorating the outside of the product with ordinary mirrors, as they may not withstand the load. Choose acrylic mirrors, they are more reliable and more durable.

As you can see, it is not so difficult to assemble a transformer product, you only need desire, patience and strict adherence to drawings and instructions. We hope that our article has exhaustively helped you understand the issues of manufacturing and installing a bedroom. Good luck to you!
