• furniture stapler with staples 6 and 10 mm;
• scraper, screwdriver;
• glue gun with sticks of silicone glue;
• large scissors;
• ordinary hammer and mallet.

You need a sewing machine to work with the fabric (depending on the model of chair). In an old chair, usually the seat and back are sagging. For their building, sheet foam with a density of 25-35 g / m3 and a synthetic winterizer with a density of 200-400 g / m2 are suitable.

Choice of fabric for the chair

Dismantling the chair

Before removing the upholstery, it’s useful to photograph the chair from different angles. This will help to orient yourself when assembling the parts of the cover and when upholstering it.

First, the chair needs to be turned over, the legs removed and the brackets removed from the bottom. On some models, the armrests are removable and upholstered separately. Having disassembled a chair, if possible by model, you should proceed to dismantle the upholstery. The parts of the cover must be removed without damaging one of the symmetrical parts of the armrest. The back and seat are removed entirely. According to the old details, new ones from the purchased fabric will be cut out.

Under the cover is usually a layer of synthetic winterizer and foam. They also need replacing. Old foam must be completely replaced if it crumbles over time. Whole sagging foam rubber can be grown with polyurethane foam and synthetic winterizer. In some models, a spring block is located inside the foam. The condition of their connection is checked, if necessary, the springs are replaced, bandaged in a new way.

The chair is dismantled, it is possible to evaluate the upcoming work on its upholstery. Using a sharp furniture knife, new details of foam rubber 2-4 cm thick are cut. Foam with a larger thickness is cut with a very sharp large knife.

Cut the fabric and collect the cover

Disassemble the carefully removed cover into individual parts. They should be ironed carefully with steam and aligned so that the weft and warp threads are at right angles. So you can be sure that the consequences of tissue deformation during the first upholstery and operation will be leveled. The details of the old cover are restored, you can start cutting new clothes for the chair. Details are cut out on matter laid out in one layer. The first to fit the largest in area details. Small parts are laid out between them.

IMPORTANT! Old parts and new ones should coincide in the direction of the warp thread (warp thread is a thread parallel to the edge of the fabric).

For fabric with a pattern there are important cutting rules:

• First you need to choose the direction of the picture - the top of the "flower" is always directed in one direction;
• for each large part, a center is defined, for a flower it coincides with the center of the part;
• the direction of the back pattern coincides with the direction of the seat;
• the pattern on the armrests is directed from the outside to the center of the seat, i.e. the direction of the pattern on the armrest is perpendicular to the seat.

After cutting, you can start sewing. All lines from the old case are repeated, in reverse order of disassembling it. Very strong threads should be used for sewing. For finishing seams, they are selected suitable for the fabric color and greater thickness than the inner lines.

When upholstered, some operations using staples “hide” in the groove of the frame (a recess in diameter of one centimeter). This operation completes the gluing of the finishing cord, matched to the color of the fabric. You can put any cord that is suitable in diameter on the fabric. The result will be even better than using a finished trim cord.

The cover is ready, you can upholstery.

Tighten and assemble the chair

According to the photographs taken in advance, we repeat the upholstery in reverse disassembly of the sequence. First, all large parts made of foam rubber and a spring block dressed in foam are mounted. The spring unit is attached to the frame. From above, everything is worn with a synthetic winterizer. All layers of foam rubber and synthetic winterizer are glued with a suitable glue.

Fabric items are upholstered with a furniture stapler. Upholstery tension should be strongest on the seat, back and armrests. All other parts of the chair are upholstered so that there is no slack anywhere, the fabric is carefully straightened. In the corners, where necessary, small symmetrical folds are laid.

After upholstering the components, you can proceed with their installation. All metal mounts should be replaced with new ones. Finishing cord is glued into the grooves, carved wood trim elements are mounted. The back of the chair and bottom are upholstered last, legs are mounted.
