How to remove odor from an electric kettle

An electric kettle is a device that a person uses daily at least several times a day. In order for drinking water to be beneficial for your health and tea drinking to be pleasurable, it’s important that the kettle does not emit any odors. This can be observed with the purchase of a new device, as well as with improper use or poor quality of water used. What causes unpleasant odors and what are the proven remedies?

Causes of unpleasant odors in an electric kettle

New electrical technology may smell like materials or auxiliary substances used in production. Usually odors can be eliminated after several boiling procedures.

The smell of plastic in a new teapot is a consequence of the following factors:

  • technical oil residues after manufacture;
  • the smell of packaging materials in which the goods were located;
  • not completely weathered paint, if the product contains painted parts;
  • manufacturer's use of cheap dyes or plasticizers in plastic.

IMPORTANT! If you feel a too pungent chemical smell before buying a new device, it is better to pay attention to other models. Typically, such low-quality plastic materials are used in cheap, short-lived technology.

Odor during operation of the appliance can occur for several reasons:

  • accumulation of old water - when the inner tank is not washed and the remaining contents are not drained from it;
  • problems with the water supply system or contamination of the cleaning filters - if the water is initially of poor quality;
  • ingress of foreign substances or odors from the environment.

How to remove the smell of plastic from the kettle in different ways

Manufacturers recommend a new kettle after purchase, be sure to boil several times, each time draining and filling again. This is required in order to clean the device of the remnants of production substances that come with new material and equipment at the factory.

What to do if the smell does not go away during normal boiling? In this case, you can use some popular folk remedies.

ATTENTION! When choosing a particular method, pay attention to its safety. It is preferable to use products that are not harmful to health (citric acid, soda, bay leaf) so that their possible ingress into drinking water does not cause poisoning.

Consider the most effective odor control methods.

Lemon acid

The most environmentally friendly way to clean and get rid of odors is to use lemon or its derivatives. Dissolve in a teapot 3 tbsp. l citric acid (50 g). You can replace it with lemon juice. You can also use lemon peel: boil water with skins and leave to insist, rinse after a few hours.

Bay leaf

Pour water into the kettle and put 10 bay leaves (half a bag). Boil and leave for a couple of hours. Then boil again, rinse and can use to boil drinking water.

Baking soda

Fill the kettle and dissolve 3-4 tbsp. l ordinary soda. Bring to a boil and drain the resulting solution. If necessary, you can repeat the procedure. After the smell has disappeared, rinse the kettle.

Acetic acid

Add to the water 2 tbsp. l acetic acid or 100-150 ml of table vinegar. Heat the kettle without boiling (otherwise, the bubbling acid solution will spill out). After using acid, be sure to thoroughly rinse the inside of the tank and let it ventilate until the vinegar odor is gone.

Carbonated drinks

To remove the plastic smell, you can simply boil several times in a new kettle instead of Sprite or Cola water. They contain orthophosphoric acid (and in the first - also citric acid), which not only eliminates odors, but also perfectly cleanses.

Pour the drink to the maximum acceptable level, after boiling, drain and rinse.

Detergents

When boiling, you can add a few drops of any washing solution, the main thing. For example, powder or dishwashing liquid. After using foreign substances, it is important to rinse everything thoroughly to prevent chemicals from entering the drink.

IMPORTANT! If the unpleasant odor remains even after all of the above procedures, the manufacturer may have used cheap toxic plastic for the production, the operation of such a kettle can be harmful to health.

How to remove a musty smell from a kettle

To get rid of the appearance of mustiness in the teapot, just rinse it and perform the following sequence of actions:

  1. Put 2-3 tbsp. On the bottom of the appliance. l sugar or a few slices of refined sugar. Leave for 12 hours. Thanks to this, all the unpleasant odor is absorbed.
  2. Pour in water and pour a small amount of citric acid. Bring the resulting solution to a boil.
  3. Rinse the kettle and leave it open until all odors are completely gone.

In the future, try to make sure that stagnant water does not go out. To do this, drain unused residues more often and pour new fresh water to boil. If you need to make tea for just one cup, just fill the kettle to the minimum mark.

In the event of a prolonged absence, drain the remaining liquid from the appliance to prevent it from stagnating.

REFERENCE! On average, drinking boiled water remains fresh for no more than a day, and repeated boiling makes it no longer so tasty and healthy.

If the problem is initially the quality of the water itself, you should change the filter in the treatment system or look for a problem in the water supply itself. If it is impossible to improve the quality of tap water, you can order or purchase in a store already purified safe drinking water. By observing all the recommendations for caring for the electric kettle and using quality water, you can avoid any unpleasant odors in the future.
