Installing a hood in the kitchen

An air intake or household hood is the same accessory needed in the kitchen as a hob and refrigerator. Without it, it’s hard to imagine a hostess’s functional workplace in which it will be comfortable to cook food.

In addition to its main function - the organization of direct air exchange through forced air intake, the hood also provides the desired level of illumination, since there is not enough light from other sources above the stove.

In this regard, the implementation of competent installation is extremely important for the ability to effectively use the parameters embedded in this household appliance. The article will focus on the nuances of installing hoods with your own hands, depending on their design features and configuration.

Installation of air intake equipment consists of several types of work: the organization of a channel for the withdrawal of air masses outside the premises (with the exception of "flat" models), the supply and connection to the mains, and the fastening of the structure to the supporting surface. The details of the last mentioned step are more dependent on the type of hood you have purchased.

There are several basic options, the installation of which will be discussed in more detail in the relevant sections. These models are:

  • hanging;
  • built-in;
  • wall mounted;
  • inclined;
  • angular;
  • island.

REFERENCE! Exhaust units are fundamentally divided into 2 classes: recirculation and exhaust. The former are equipped with a system of internal disposable filters that clean the air flow passing through them and return it to the room. The outlet models involve connecting to a centralized ventilation system via an air duct (ventilation duct or corrugated pipe) or direct exhaust air discharge through the room wall to the outside.

Installation of a suspension hood

There are different ideas about the suspended type of devices. In this article, the term "suspended hood" refers to a flat type of air intake technology mainly with a recirculating air filtration system. Sometimes such models are also called visor models. It is believed that they are most easily installed due to the absence of the need in most cases to organize a channel for air exhaust. Hanging devices are characterized by low power, light weight and, as a rule, do not have high performance.

The hanging model is mounted on the surface of the wall above the stove. Due to its small size and mass, it is not required to have special skills for the installation of such equipment. On the case of the device there are holes for its fasteners.

REFERENCE! In the case of brick or concrete walls, for drilling under the holders you will need an impact drill or hammer drill with a drill bit. It is also necessary to have a sufficient number of plugs (dowels). For fastening on a wooden support, a drill with a small diameter drill or a screwdriver will suffice. The size of the screws is selected based on the weight of the fixed structure and the surface on which it will be mounted. This is true for mounting any type of hood.

First you need to correctly mark the holes for fixing. From the middle of the plate, the distance is measured at which the lower edge of the device should be located. This value depends on several factors, but primarily on the type of hob. The height of the suspension can be specified in the operating instructions supplied with the appliance.

Draw a horizontal line at a measured distance using the level. Point to the intersection of the horizontal with the height raised from the middle of the tile. You have determined the center of the device. Left and right, measure half the length of the implement and take notes. Now attach your hood so that the lower edge coincides with the drawn horizontal, and the adjacent corners with notches. In this position, you need to mark with an awl or pencil points for the mounting holes.

Carefully remove the device, drill according to marks, drive the dowels to the full depth flush with the wall using a rubber-headed hammer. Lift the air intake back and tighten the fixing screws through the mounting holes of the housing using a screwdriver. Please note that the power cord from the device is not pinched between its rear edge and the wall, first unplug it in the direction of the electrical outlet.

Turn on the plug. Installation completed.

Installation of the built-in hood

The built-in model harmoniously fits into the kitchen design, because it is installed inside the wall cabinet above the stove. A distinctive feature is the fastening of the product not to the wall, but inside the furniture. The latter is mounted on the wall by means of special hinged parts. Ventilation ducts and a socket do not spoil the interior, as they remain hidden from view, located behind the cabinet door.

Furniture for a built-in range hood must exactly match all its sizes, so it is purchased together or ordered for a specific model. The bottom edge of the device should coincide with the bottom of the cabinet into which it will be built.

Put the cabinet on its side and use the screws to fix the hood in it. With the help of an electric jigsaw, make cuts in the right place under the ventilation duct and outlet.

The weight of the prefabricated element will be quite large, so the fasteners to the wall should be made with high quality, using durable mounting materials.

The mark for the holes for the cabinet can be made according to the method described above. Suspend the assembly, plug the device into a hidden outlet.

ATTENTION!When drilling holes in the wall, be careful not to get the outlet supplying the hood into the electrical wiring.

Installing a wall hood

Wall models in accordance with the name are fixed on the wall. Unlike flat devices, they have significant vertical dimensions that do not allow them to be placed under wall-mounted cabinets. The case of such devices can vary significantly in shape and size, but the plane of the air intake is always parallel to the hob.

Before starting fasteners, it is necessary to partially disassemble the device by disconnecting the upper part of the housing and remove the filters. Next, you need to mark "in place" or using the template attached to the instructions, drill holes, insert plugs into them, and screw the screws to the desired depth. Hang the appliance on the protruding metal heads, if necessary, pressing the structure against the wall with a powerful screwdriver.

After bringing the ventilation boxes or corrugations to the hood and connecting to the power, strengthen the upper part of the body back, pushing it to the desired height and fixing it with bolts. Return the filters to working position and turn on the device.

Installing an inclined hood

The specificity of this form of the device allows its installation to be significantly lower than other models. The minimum distance to the electric stove is 35 cm, and to the gas hob - 55 cm. Otherwise, the installation sequence is the same as when installing wall options:

  1. Mark up.
  2. Drill holes, insert dowels into them.
  3. Wrap screws or anchors.
  4. Hang the device, lock it.
  5. Connect to the air exchange system through a corrugated pipe or plastic ducts (if necessary).
  6. Insert the plug into the outlet located behind the air intake.
  7. Hide visible communications with decorative elements.

The hood is ready for use.

ATTENTION!When organizing the duct through the ducts, remember that the maximum number of right angles in the channel should not be more than three. Otherwise, the air exchange will be significantly less due to loss of power.

Angle hood installation

Corner models are designed for suspension of exhaust devices over hobs located in the corner of the kitchen, provided that the angle between the walls of the room is not beveled and is 900.

REFERENCE! Corner mounting "on the bevel" is completely identical to the installation of a suspended version of the equipment.

When angularly installing the hood, it is advisable to check the correct geometry of the walls using a square or laser level. If the real value of the angle differs significantly from the direct, the installation may be difficult, or the device will snap into place, not adjacent to the walls, which will look ugly.

The main difference during the installation process is a slightly simplified marking procedure. You do not have to look for the vertical axis of symmetry, since it will coincide with the line of the angle.

Island hood installation

In island air intake devices, the fundamental difference is that they are not fixed to the vertical surface of the wall, but to the ceiling. This specificity stems from the scope of such models - they can be located anywhere in the room, as a rule, not adjacent to the walls. The place in the kitchen for the organization of the working area in the middle of the room is called the island. From here follows the name of the hood.

Mounting an island device is considered the most difficult. Marking will have to be done on the ceiling, and in this case it will be extremely difficult to do without a laser roulette with a level. You will have to level out at least in two planes, and taking into account the fact that communications can be hidden behind a false ceiling, it is possible that all three of them (with anchoring).

The ceiling installation must be extremely reliable, as in this case the force of gravity will be directed in the opposite direction to the fixing elements - screws, brackets, studs, etc.

Installation details vary significantly depending on the island hood model you have chosen. The following components are included in the package of delivery:

  • mounting platform;
  • housing;
  • additional fasteners.

The basic design of the hood, including the motor, can sometimes be fixed on cables or through studs.

Special attention should be paid to the hidden supply of communications, since in the immediate environment it is unlikely that there will be a ventilation outlet or a vacant power outlet.
