Mouse runs around the screen

Computer users sometimes encounter a problem when the cursor starts running around the screen and ceases to be manageable. This interferes with both work and leisure at the computer. Sometimes because of this, windows and programs open independently, which slows down the system and can lead to undesirable consequences. But what caused the mouse twitching or jumping and how to figure it out?

Popular problems and solutions

First of all, you need to make sure that the problem is with the mouse, and is not a consequence of other computer crashes. To do this, you need to check, for example, the keyboard - whether “Start”, “Task Manager” or something else are opened using it. If so, then the reason is really in the mouse. If not, you will have to look for it further, in the state of the entire computer.
Suppose that the problem is with the mouse, everything else works as usual. What to do?

  1. In the best case, it may turn out that the mouse sensitivity settings have gone astray, so it responds to any movement, even fleeting. Then it’s easy enough to restore the necessary settings. But if this is not the case, the situation may be more serious.
  2. Perhaps someone got remote access to the computer, and the cursor simply follows the movements of his mouse. To verify this, go to the Remote Access section and check the active connections. If they are, but the user did not know about it, they should be disconnected and blocked, and then check the system with antivirus.
  3. It could also be a virus. They come in different types: some destroy the operating system, others spy on users and steal data ... Many of them can affect the connected equipment, including the mouse. To eliminate the trouble in this case, you need to completely scan the system using antivirus and fix all the problems found. If the reason was in the virus, then after that the cursor will come in order.
  4. Garbage. Inside the mouse, dust and dirt may clog over time. When there are too many of them, the device may behave strangely: do not respond to movements, move the cursor yourself. Dirt usually accumulates either on the diode (more often) or in the computer connection jack (less often). Better to clean both.
  5. Broken nest. Perhaps, to solve the problem, it is enough to reconnect the mouse to another slot.
  6. Unsuitable work surface. The mouse may not work properly due to the inappropriate work surface being used, such as being too smooth or too rough. You should put something under it. A special mouse mat is best, but in its absence, you can use something else: a book in a suitable cover, a sheet of paper, thick fabric, and more. Even the color of the surface matters: it should be solid or at least not too colorful.

System crashes and solutions

If none of these tips helped fix the problem, then the problem may be in a system failure. It can also be solved independently, but you will have to spend more time, and you also need to possess certain skills.

Of course, we are not talking about the obvious option when the mouse itself is broken. But after its frequent falls from a height, a breakdown may occur that is imperceptible at first sight.

REFERENCE! The “inside” of the device may be knocked down, certain contacts may be broken, so it does not work correctly.

  1. Roll back the system by the time the cursor does not move randomly across the screen. If a failure occurs, rolling back to an earlier date will correct the situation.
  2. Clear the registry - if the problem is its “clogging”, then the problem will be solved after cleaning. By the way, this way you can solve other problems observed in the computer.
  3. Install mouse drivers or upgrade existing ones. In some cases, the correct operation of the device without the latest drivers is not possible. If the mouse is new, then you should find and install the appropriate drivers, if there is a malfunction in the old, then perhaps the drivers are outdated and it is time to update them. This is a fairly common problem, because rare users monitor the relevance of driver versions when they encounter a problem even when a crash occurs.
  4. The problem may be the result of larger failures in the operating system, so it should be reinstalled if all other tips did not help. The most likely cause of this problem is an unlicensed copy of the system.

Battery or wire problems

Also, one of the simple ways is to replace the battery if the mouse is wireless. Sometimes, when it is already starting to sit down, the device may habitually work, but in some cases it can start to seriously fail.

If the mouse is wired, make sure the integrity of the wire. Contacts tend to fray over time, and then problems with work are likely. In this case, the cursor may involuntarily run around the screen, or may freeze and not respond to user actions. This can be caused by the fact that the wire has an additional effect caused by its poor location.

Laptop problems

If the cursor runs on the laptop screen, and the above tips do not help, you should turn off the mouse and make sure that it is in it. If, after turning it off, the cursor still runs, there may be a malfunction in the touchpad - a special touch surface that replaces the standard mouse. There may be several reasons for its breakdown:

  • outdated drivers;
  • moisture or dirt gets on the surface;
  • the contacts inside are damaged and the laptop itself needs professional repair.

To check whether the failure is really connected with the touchpad, you should disable it - this is done using a special key or a combination of keys on the keyboard (usually they are indicated by the corresponding icon). The problem is really related to it, if after turning off the cursor stops and normally responds to a regular mouse. If it continues to run, then the problem is probably in the system itself.

The mouse remains in one corner and does not move

It happens that the arrow moves on its own. This is most often associated with a malfunction of the device (as well as with dead batteries or a worn wire). This is due to the fact that the mouse has not yet completely broken, but it works with all its might. That is, it reacts to movements, but not as required, but hardly, not obeying the user. Fixing the cursor in the corner of the screen means that the device is gradually stopping or has already stopped working.

IMPORTANT! If you are sure that the reason is not one of the above, then replace the batteries or the mouse itself.

So, despite its convenience, computer mice in some cases bring trouble. Usually this is due to simple crashes and malfunctions and can be easily solved, but sometimes fixing the problem may take longer and require certain skills. Nevertheless, it cannot be said that the cursor spontaneously moving around the screen is a consequence of something serious that would threaten the operation of the entire computer, so there is nothing to worry about, it is enough to try the proposed solutions or contact a specialist.
