How to connect a printer to a laptop

A printer purchased from a licensed computer hardware store can be easily connected to a PC. To do this, you need to find instructions for it and follow it. But the task is complicated if the update is second-hand or "gray" (imported not completely legal): the user manual may be missing or it simply does not have a section in a familiar language. Such problems are easily solved if you act thoughtfully and unhurriedly.

Preparing to connect

Regardless of the duet with which technology the printer will work, it should be understood: this device does not like frequent movements and requires free space around it. Careful attention should be paid to the paper points and the output of printed sheets: the first is necessary for the convenience of the user, and the second is for the printer to work properly.

Having decided on the location of the new item, you should consider how to connect it to the power grid. There is no sense in powering through the UPS, the printer consumes a lot of energy and will not work anyway if the light is disconnected from the battery. If there is no free outlet nearby, the best way out would be to carry with an additional jack for a new item.

When these issues are resolved, it is time to prepare for the connection. The basic equipment of the printer includes:

  • power cord (often removable);
  • cable with USB plug;
  • installation disk.

If everything you need was found in the box - fine, you can proceed to the crucial moment. The fact that what should be done in the absence of the last pair of components will be discussed a little below.

Connection progress

First stage - Basic verification of the printer. To do this, you must connect the power cord to it and send the plug to the outlet. Success is indicated by illuminated device indicators. Some of them may blink - this is not scary, the technique conducts self-diagnostics, which usually takes no more than 5 minutes. After the specified time, the update should be disconnected from the network.

If the lights are off, you need to find the power button on the body of the product. It can be located on the rear panel, near the power cable, or at the top of the front control panel. After clicking on it, the printer will turn on.

If at the time of the test check there was a crackle or there was a smell of burned plastic, it is better not to risk it and not to proceed to the next steps. These phenomena may indicate a malfunction of technology and require the treatment of specialists.

Second phase - connection to the computer. The classic way is using a USB cable with Type A and Type B plugs. The first one plugs into any convenient port on a PC or laptop, and the second one into the appropriate connector on the printer.

These manipulations can be carried out with the equipment turned on, then the computer's operating system will immediately notify the user about connecting a new device. But experts recommend to be safe and turn off the printer before the first connection using USB.

If the kit does not have the correct cable, it may indicate that the printer can be connected wirelessly. To make sure it is present, it is enough to examine the icons near the indicators on the body of the new thing and find the Wi-Fi symbol. Near it is usually located the corresponding button, clicking on which activates the desired function. A successful indicator is indicated by a lit indicator. He points out that now is the time to find the printer in the computer menu.

To do this, you must first go to Start, then to Control Panel / Equipment. In the window that opens there is the Devices and Printers item. Now you should add a new device to the list. Clicking on the “Add new devices” sub-item will launch an automatic search for available equipment. Further, all work is carried out in accordance with the prompts Windows.

Stage Three - loading the driver. To do this, send the installation disk to the PC drive and follow the prompts on the monitor. If you connect a printer to a laptop with this, there may be some difficulties - often compact computers do not have disk drives. The same method can be used if there is simply no installation disk.

In such a situation, you will need an internet connection. In the search engine, you need to find drivers for your printer, download and install them, following the tooltips, set up the printer for work.

It is best to download data packets from the official website of the manufacturer of the equipment - this ensures the correct operation of the device and the absence of viruses in the downloaded file.

After installing the driver, the printer is ready to print.

Health check

To make sure that everything is done correctly, you should load the paper in the receiver and perform a test print of the document. This can be a text file from Microsoft Word or an image from Paint, which are transferred to paper by clicking on the "Print" item in the menu of the corresponding program or by pressing the "Ctrl + P" key combination.
